The story
The Leadspitters were invented by someone who was told to stop, and who did not.
The holds' engineering guilds are conservative for good reasons, most of them involving previous engineers, and black powder took three generations to be accepted on any terms at all. What finally won the argument was not performance but bookkeeping: a Leadspitter crew can be trained in a season, where a warrior takes a decade, and a hold that has lost a generation does not have a decade. The guilds have never fully forgiven the weapon for being right.
They are issued, used, and referred to in official records as a temporary measure. It has been temporary for ninety years.
Smoke-stained metal and scorched leather — keep the armour clean where it is protected and filthy where the barrel sits, so the model tells you how it is actually held.
