The story
Sekhmet is a goddess of slaughter and of healing, and the priesthood has spent three thousand years insisting this is not a contradiction.
The argument runs that both are the same act seen from different ends: something is opened, something is decided, and afterwards there is either a body or a patient. It is not a comforting theology and it has never tried to be. What it is, unusually among the river faiths, is accurate — her temples run the best hospitals on the delta and supply the most feared soldiers in it, out of the same building, from the same order, under the same vows.
The vows do not distinguish between the two duties. Novices find this out early.
A centrepiece that should be beautiful and frightening at once — hot gold, lion tawny, white linen, and blood kept off the model entirely so the face has to do the work.
