The story
The sandmancers were the last aristocracy to give up on the desert, and they have not entirely given up yet.
Their estates are under it now, which they regard as a temporary administrative matter. The houses still meet, still hold titles to land nobody has seen in nine generations, still keep the boundary disputes alive, and still — this is the part outsiders cannot get past — collect rents, from tenants who pay them, in cities that were founded long after the estates were buried. The arrangement is upheld by the river courts because unravelling it would be worse.
Asked whether they intend to dig, they say that the sand is not permanent. They have been saying it for six hundred years.
Old wealth going to ruin — immaculate silks with sand in every fold, tarnished gold, and a palette bleached as though it has been in the sun too long.
