The story
The court calls them the Baron's mistresses. The Baron's treasurer calls them the reason the barony is solvent.
Three of them hold estates in their own right, two run the correspondence with the river cities, and the one the gossip is loudest about has quietly managed the grain contracts for eleven years. The arrangement is unconventional and entirely deliberate: a barony that survives by knowing things before its neighbours do needs people with standing at court and no formal office to be held against them. The gossip is useful cover, and every woman involved understands that better than the people spreading it.
The Baron's enemies have never once worked out which of them to watch.
Court dress painted like status rather than decoration — rich fabric, restrained jewellery, and faces that should look composed rather than decorative.
